from 122 reviewsA friend gave me this collection of prayers for my birthday and I love it! I have been a Christian for 33 years but the way I connect to God is through His Word so this book has been wonderful to help me grow in connecting through prayer. So many of the prayers are beautiful and I could have never expressed myself as the writers but I have begun to take some of them and use them as a springboard to make them my own prayers. I am so grateful as I could have never collected the various prayers and put them in an usable form such as this. It really is amazing! I have sent one to a friend as well as showed it to my sister and she was so excited as she has been looking for a book like this. Thank you so much for this incredible compilation! I highly, highly recommend it!
I very much appreciated this book. It presents the scriptures to answer the question in the title. I have asked many preachers and Biblical scholars the question “ what happens when we die?” Their answer has been that we aren’t certain , the Bible doesn’t clearly state the answer. I found Douglas Jacoby laid out all of the scenarios in the Bible and it is not definitive exactly when we are judged and when we go to Heaven (hopefully). We can’t take a particular scripture and have it stand alone in the answer. It’s a good book. Stating words from The Bible.
I’m only about 1/4 through Origins now and so far am impressed . Having a different mindset from my modern day thinking as Douglas and Paul discuss is allowing me to have an even deeper understanding of not only Genesis, but the Bible as a whole. This book is enabling me to have a deeper cultural understanding of both the author(s) and the audience. Thank you.
Such a great book and one I've had to revisit over the years.Made me feel fully equipped to more effectively share about God and the bible with others and specifically with non-believers. I always leave this book feeling closer to God and eager to share my learnings with others.
I can’t think of anyone better to address the issues facing our church than Douglas Jacoby. In “Calling Out The People Of God” he lays out the truth with kindness, clarity and brevity. We should all be alarmed upon seeing the deficit between what leadership is and what it should be. Followers, too, should be willing to create an atmosphere where leaders feel comfortable calling us higher. May God use this slim volume to cut out our work (of faith) for us and help us hear the call to “glory, honor and immortality.”
Informed helps us identify some of the weeds growing in our culture. Douglas and Joseph address current and relevant philosophy . Many of these subtly grow within denominations such as clergy/role or predestination. They teach us about cultural shifts to materialism, and to pleasure. This book truly develops awareness of alarming spiritual issues. However we will be able to “pull weeds” with gentleness and respect.
Frequently, Douglas Jacoby refers to the Bible as a library. This book exemplifies the use of genres as teaching tools. Ancient and modern day maps help with orientation. Cultural narratives develop setting content. Character strengths and weaknesses highlight authenticity. Lists, poems, wisdom literature and apocalyptic style are all included. With his diverse use of genre, Douglas shows God’s fingerprints through time.
I have always found comfort in reading the psalms, but wanted to learn more. I am about midway through and this book has helped to deepened my understanding and wisdom in how I need to regard God's word to make his thoughts my thoughts. I especially appreciate the prayer points. Happy reading!
Bought this book to test others and my knowledge of the scriptures …… and it is definitely worth the purchase. This book would be a great addition to any personal and/or public library - as an encouraging and influential learning aid. It has spurred me on to wanting to study the scriptures more! Highly recommended!!
Thanks Douglas for this book about suffering and the consistent loving and compassionate nature of God. He is an ever present help in our troubles, it is in the suffering that we can learn this truth and learn to rely on Him even more. Thanks for reminding me, suffering is not my enemy and that God is never absent. I highly recommend this book.
This book gives a fresh perspective on a Biblical classic! It is concise and encourages deeper Bible study and personal spiritual growth.
I enjoy reading about Biblical issues, and also listening to podcasts and watching videos on the same. Over the last several years I've noticed a growing trend: theology that attempts to bind Jewish laws, customs and practices on the Christian, or in particular, the Jewish Christian. Dr. Jacoby addresses this significant trend in a very helpful, patient, and methodical way, yet the book is not a slow read. He gets right to the issues, offering clear Biblical perspective to help his readers to think analytically about the related trends and concepts. And because his subject matter deals with law and grace, he writes a portion of this book to explain how the Old Testament Law transitions to the New Testament covenant of grace. His explanation and guidance through the Scriptures on how we are no longer under Law but grace now is the BEST job I've ever read or heard. And the author strikes an excellent balance between the academic approach and the "common man" approach, making the issues plain but not over-simplified. He gets a lot done in a short book.
The most thorough evangelism handbook you'll find.
Love the story of Elijah, and this work from our brother in Christ Dr. Douglas Jacoby does an amazing job, bringing it to life. You will draw closer to God and be revived spiritually and renewed in your faith.
This is a fantastic commentary. It is filled with both interesting background information and practical application. It is thorough yet never tedious; it is scholarly yet fascinating; it is convicting and yet inspiring. I would highly recommend it.
